The Season Ahead

Week 20th - 26th September 2021

We've had a beautiful summer September, schools are back, and the seasons are slowly changing again. Out already are the heavy hitters of hot, sunny climate fruit like melons. Now we'll see a few weeks of shortages whilst South American fruit arrives. It's unlikely we'll see many surplus melons until the season really starts (anyway - early season fruit is not that sweet).

Southern European stone fruit is slowly coming to an end. Unusually there has not been much peach or nectarine surplus this year. Now is the time to be careful as a lot of fruit won't ripen properly having come out of storage.

Also in the coming weeks English salads will wind down as the cooler weather sets in. With very high gas prices some growers have suggested they will stop early this year. But we'll start to see the mainland European salad season start which usually comes with a flurry of surplus.

But that's fruit & veg. In the months to follow we will be testing some customisable options (less waste - yay!) for our boxes and adding some free rescue items so you can help us do more.

Back to school (of surplus) and we'll be reaching out to you parents of schools we work with to see if we can do more to provide super nutrition to year groups that aren't eligible for a government subsidised snack. As well as wee gala apples, this week we were able deliver an amazing glut of good quality raspberries into our schools.

Taking it to the street, look out for raspberries, avocados, apples, mangos, peppers, courgettes, sweet potatoes and soon, broccoli and cauliflowers. All of these (and more!) can be found at your local street trader who are out rescuing surplus in all weather! Go top up with them when you can - their prices will be brilliant!
